'We must all be inoculated against the disinformation virus!'

In my book Coddled Children, I depict a totalitarian equalized society in which all information is carefully managed and guided. Many people think I just wrote a scary book and that the world of Coddled Children can never come to pass in a free democracy like the European Union. Is this really the case or are we next in line after the Canadians to implement ‘minority report’ measures that will drastically curb our freedom of speech and thought?

Below the radar of most people, on May 14th 2024 the chairwoman of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, gave a speech about ‘protecting democracy’ at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit. She of course first lashed out against Russia, the common enemy we are all taught to hate, but also took a swing against malign people spreading disinformation and sowing discontent. If Ursula is re-elected, she will put up a ‘democracy-shield’ consisting of three basic elements: 1. Detection: the EU will set up its own intelligence agency to detect and counter disinformation and foreign interference. 2. Treatment: internet platforms will be strictly enforced to swiftly remove all content the EU has decreed as disinformation or propaganda. 3. Prebunking: the EU wants to build up societal immunity against information manipulation.

According to Ursula, we need to be vaccinated against the ‘disinformation virus’, protecting us from all sources of online harm. A preemptive strike against all information that may possibly alter our views or may learn us something the EU does not want us to know.

But is that what we want or need? Someone else deciding for us what information we may receive? Someone else telling us what to think and what to believe? Are we coddled children then, who must be herded into safe-spaces and protected against all information our leaders consider false and evil?

Let’s not forget that evil empires need to bound themselves in webs of hate toward fabricated enemies, not free democracies.
